Twilight Zelda always seemed deliciously dark:

She had to strike a horrible bargain to save the lives of her
people. But was this half life she doomed her people to the right choice? Maybe
she should have fought despite the seeming impossibility? The uncertainty
tortures her

And here comes sweet, innocent Link. Chosen to be the pure hero
of light who gets to banish the darkness. He’ll never have to make hard
decisions. He’ll never agonize over his choices, because his destiny is simple.
Sure he’s cute, but that just makes Zelda’s resentment burn colder. She hates
that she wants him to save her too. That she wants him to claim his reward
right after…

When Ganon was summoned he quickly sensed Zelda’s feelings and
took full advantage. She didn’t need this “Chosen Hero,” he told her. She
was the ruler, the one who had been there for her people while he was stilling
playing with sheep on some farm. Join him, Ganon promised, and he’d respect her
power. He’d give her her people back. She’d be their savior. With her new
Prince consort Ganondorf at her side, making her every whim a reality. Every whim, he added, suggestively. Then he’d cage that
insolent Midna and give her to Zelda as a bridal gift. Meanwhile, Link would be
stripped of his triforce and made their pet. He’d be her reward, not the other
way around.

It was an offer she didn’t refuse.

Peach and Bowser make a way better couple. They both have good senses of aesthetics, they have shared interests and experiences, and they spend a lot of quality time together. Not to mention the whole kidnapping kink they can indulge in with each other.
